SoundApp is a utility that can play and convert a wide range of sound files, including MP3, AIFF, WAV, MOD, MIDI, and many other formats. The program also includes a playlist that's great for grouping your favorite sound files together, and can perform many conversion operations, including sample rate, stereo-to-mono, bit depth, and other conversions.

Other features include a slider for random access playback, playlist indicators that show which file is being processed and which files have been processed, and more. Version 2.6.1 adds support for AudioCatalyst's variable-bit rate MPEG Layer 3 audio files and the MacAmp file format, improves AppleScript functionality, enhances the playlist, and fixes numerous bugs found in version 2.6.

sm clear square sm clear square Price: freeware
sm clear square sm clear square Publisher: Apple Computer
Disk Copy is a utility application that will mount disk images on your desktop, make exact copies of floppy disks from a disk image, convert disk images from one format to another, create a disk image from a mounted volume or individual folder, segment a disk image into separate files, create self-mounting disk images, and create a new blank disk image. Using DiskScripts, AppleScript, and self-mounting images, it can be used to automate software installations and disk image manipulation.

5. Screen Utilities
sm clear square Desktop Icon Manager
sm clear square sm clear square Version 1.3
sm clear square sm clear square Price: Freeware
sm clear square sm clear square Publisher: G.J. Parker
Desktop Icon Manager (DIM) is an AppleScript that saves and restores the icon positions on the desktop without getting confused when you store the icon positions at one screen resolution and then restore them at a different screen resolution. In other words, if an icon is at the lower right corner of the display when the icon positions are stored, then that icon will always be placed at the lower right corner regardless of the screen resolution. Just put the DIM folder anywhere you like and - after dragging your various desktop icons to where you would like them to be, simply drag the AppleScript Desktop Icon Manager script onto DIM and pick what operation you want to perform. Then make an alias of DIM (not the script) and place it in the Startup Items folder to ensure all your icons are precisely where you want them when you turn on your Mac.

sm clear square Eclipse
sm clear square sm clear square Version 3.1.1
sm clear square sm clear square Price: $15 US
sm clear square sm clear square Publisher: Ambrosia
Eclipse is a small - very little RAM, disk space and processor time - Power PC (and 68K) screen saver. Although it has many nice visual effects: PICTs, JPEGs and GIFs and QuickTime movies, the main thing I like about it is its ability to display a floating digital cleck. It's quite customizabile and offers password protection. It can also control the Energy Saver features of the Mac including automatic monitor deactivation, hard drive spindown, and computer shutdown.

sm clear square Action GoMac
sm clear square sm clear square Version 2.0.2
sm clear square sm clear square Price: $29.95/$39.95 US
sm clear square sm clear square Publisher: PowerOn
If you've ever seen the "task bar" at the bottom of the screen on Microsoft Windows', you know what GoMac is. Very useful: however, the recent price increase is making it a bit pricey for what it does. The first price listed is for electronic download; the second price is for a physical disk and printed manual.

6. Disk Utilities
sm clear square TechTool
sm clear square sm clear square Version 1.1.9
sm clear square sm clear square Price: Freeware
sm clear square sm clear square Publisher: MicroMat

TechTool gives you the ability to, quickly, rebuild your desktop, zap your PRAM, analyse your system and help you clean your floppy drive.
sm clear square Trash DeskTop
sm clear square sm clear square Version 1.2.1
sm clear square sm clear square Price: freeware
sm clear square sm clear square Publisher: Daniel Muller
A very useful tool, especially for those who do a lot of "experimenting" on their hard drives. trash DeskTop allows one to simply drag a hard disk onto it and it moves the "Desktop DB" and the "Desktop DF" to the trash. Then restart the computer and the hard drive(s)'s desktop(s) will be rebuilt. (You can empty the trash of the old "Desktop DB" and "Desktop DF" after the computer finishes rebuilding the desktop(s).)
